In addition to being self-priming, peristaltic pumps are frequently chosen for being consistent and safe, with fewer opportunities for major accidents to occur. Keep reading to learn more about why peristaltic pumps are safer by design!

This post is the second of a multi-post series. A full breakdown of the advantages of a peristaltic pump can be found here: https://mixing.seprosystems.com/category/peristaltic-pumps/

Peristaltic Pumps Can Run Dry

One advantage of the peristaltic pump is that it can run dry without causing damage to the pump.

Unlike centrifugal pumps, which require constant supply of liquid to cool the pump shaft and internals, a peristaltic pump can run with or without liquid, and will not suffer from any damage.

Peristaltic Pumps Are Safer By Design

One advantage of being able to run dry is that peristaltic pumps are inherently safer by design.

Centrifugal pumps have been noted to explode – and this has been a popular topic in safety publications and seminars across the globe. The consequences of such explosions can be truly devastating.

When the flow of liquid to a centrifugal pump is stopped for some reason – either the suction line is plugged, or someone forgot to open the valve – the fast-spinning impeller will increase the temperature, which rises to a point which will evaporate the remaining liquid in the pump. At this point, running the pump any further will heat up all pump components due to the dry friction between the shaft and stationary parts.

Unlike with centrifugal pumps, peristaltic pumps can run dry. This means that the above scenario will not happen with a peristaltic pump, adding an additional layer of safety to the process line. Such explosions in a centrifugal pump, which can be caused by accident or neglect, are completely mitigated simply by running a peristaltic pump in its stead.
